Apprentice Posts: 3 Joined: 17 May 2007 | Hmm thats odd i thought i clicked a link to an artical of importance. Istead i found an artical that half of it actually focuses on an idea "maps" that the Devs said they would not use. If the maps are goin to exist anyway why not implement them anyway? hmm tough one, lets see, since illegal drugs are goin to find there way into teens hands why not give it to them? oh i know its wrong. not saying that maps are wrong but if you actually took the time to understand Darkfall you would see the down side to maps. Did you run out of time for this artical? or simply not care? |

You have taken a neutral stance in reference to a subject that has already been "won and lost" in many peoples mind. People come to read these articles..or any article about dark fall for that matter..to gain a newer insight that satisfies their inquery. They want to feel satisfied that the information expanded their knowledge in some way about the game. They (not all mind you) have expectations that are not met by the stance that you generally take. For some others, they merely use the articles as entertainment. My suggestion would be for the most part to do as best you can to see the current state of the game as DF players know it, and not necessarily feed off of their very words, but see the perspectives flying around before posting. It's not about pleasing the DFO community per say..but if you are expecting to win them over with your words, then it may help if you look into their world..as i promise you, everyone who's really watching DFO have disected every ounce of information they possibly can since they have, seemingly, nothing else to do. To summarize, if your going to type things that concern DFO in "comparison" with DFO forum jabber, then it's best to fully understand where that has lead on each side of the argument, and add your piece from that perspective. The main scrutiny i've witnessed of you is merely that you say things that have occured to most posters within the reference you described, and thus did not satisfy them with your "answer" ...which i assume was purposefully left as a questioning stance to devs. |
Apprentice Posts: 2 Joined: 28 Jun 2007 | i just had to add my 2 cents here. maps and radar were never a question for me once i understood what the dev'ers were trying to do with dfo...which is make it as life like as possible. *squinting* nope no radar. if i can't make it appear in real life then it's not in the game according to one of the dev'ers stated goals. now you and i could go buy/make a radar if we wanted to but in dfo that's obviously not a possibility whereas maps can be drawn. so, in game you could draw your own maps or i'm sure adventurine will partner with prima or something to sell books of maps for regions, cities, and anything else where maps would be pertenant. (omg yes i have a life with responsibilities, unlike when i was 16, and thus can't always spend all the time needed to draw maps etc and chart enemy stats etc. so i buy the guides so i can focus more on gaming and not building a beastiary guide.) for those that want maps there will be maps. radar i'd have to say won't be there and i know this because the dfo site says so. |

Well Im sure we, DArkfall Warcry, will have a section for Darkfall maps that has been done by staff or fans. So you won't have to look hard to find maps :D Morkdaorc |

Around Agon: In Game Maps
Article by Gamegoddess
Todays column was inspired by a topic thread from the official forums about in game maps so thank you Tearofsoul.

If we go back to Ultima Online and look at what was in game we find the Cartographer. At a low skill you could only make maps of the immediate area. As your skill grew, you could make maps of the general area, the cities and then maps of a large area. I remember having a cartographer and the time they were really useful was for hunting treasure not really for figuring out where you were. For knowing where you were, many used UOAM. There were of course also the out of game maps which always surface.
Developers have a real choice to make when deciding this issue. Do they leave maps out entirely? Do they put them in as an option? Do they put in radar? Is there a way to make all people happy? If it is decided to leave out radar and maps, it is a given that before beta is done, people will have out of game maps created and up on sites the day it is legal to do so. So if the maps are going to exist, why not incorporate them into the game and have them be the way you as the developer want them to be?
For the folks that don't like maps there could be an option that simply turns them off. You could allow or not allow maps and allow or not allow radar. I do wonder how many of the people that don't want maps, would still want radar. If they wanted radar, what would they want on it? For pvp purposes would they want all people to show up? Maps are going to exist. Whether or not we use them is a choice we as a player have to make.
