Here's the QA ... we worked with lists sent to us by community members and tried to answer as many as possible without too much embellishing. There was an effort to answer question categories that weren't addressed in the previous Q&A's. We didn't address the questions having to do with beta and publishing due to recent developments, we would like more time before we get into that.

Do different weapon types damage them (mobs) easier, like a spear, mace, etc.?

Different monsters are vulnerable to different types of attack. In some cases they could be nearly immune to certain attacks like a fire elemental may not take fire damage. This applies to various armors and protections as well, the varying degrees in which they could protect the player against specific types of damage. There's a whole system in place behind this, and players will learn from experience and through various information sources within the game.

In regards to this (link) info, are factions in the way described still in?

Factions work like they were described and this is through the quests. You get the symbol of the faction you're working with when you accept the quest. Factions in Darkfall aren't meant to be an active part of the world in themselves, but rather more of a storyline element of the lore guiding the actions of the players.

Will flying creatures (dragons, birds, etc) actually fly or just hover like in most MMO's?

They fly, turn, they swoop down, and they hover as well depending on the situation. They work like a proper flying mob should.

Will we see mobs walking around, with one mob every 5 meters, on a "zone" (EQ, wow, style)? Or will they be more spread, and you'll have to find them a bit? (Oblivion, morrowind style)

More like Oblivion and Morrowind but it's usually more complex than that ... In Darkfall monsters have their own habitats, they're not just scattered randomly. In the generic example of the goblins we tend to use, you would likely find them in a goblin village.

Can you tell us anything about the way crafting materials are gathered?

You can gather crafting materials from killing mobs, and looting and/or skinning them. You can harvest materials from the environment, for example from rocks, trees, bushes etc. You can get the materials faster from organized resource production, like mines and farms, while collecting in nature is slower. You can craft crafting materials used to build complex items when they're made of building blocks. Finally you can kill players and take theirs.

Are solo players able to venture into a clan controlled mine and harvest there if it's not guarded?

You can harvest in someone else's mine, however they'll get a message that you did. So as with everything else in the game, you're free to do whatever you like, but you're held accountable for your actions.

What kind of explosives does DF have in it? By explosives I mean anything from exploding arrows to explosive traps. And I don't mean siege weapons--I mean explosives that someone can craft and use on his/her own.

Darkfall has a thrown explosive called a battle spike, they're crafted and there are various types. They're used to damage structures and vehicles mostly. Darkfall also features several explosive spells.

What about maps? How do maps work in game? Will it be possible to mark a map with an interesting location on?

Darkfall has a global map and a mini map interface. There is also a weather map where you can zoom in to get local weather. You can add your own markers on the global map.

Will the whole world map be visible from the start or will players have to explore to view the whole map?

Yes it's visible. The world is pre-existing; this isn't the dawn of time in the storyline. We could have opted for map fog, but it's just going to be a pain and someone will have a full map online anyway relatively quickly.

I'm wondering is the cave system going to be complete at launch?

Nothing is ever complete in an MMO, but we've done what we planned to do for launch.

How extensive is it?

There are caves all over the world, the dwarves live inside a mountain, some clan city locations have caverns and tunnels going through them, there are the Dungeons, and the underwater passages.

Can caves lead you well into another races territory going undetected below the ground surface?

No they don't. There's no need for that....the world is so massive you don't really need to sneak underground to go undetected.

Will you actually have employees that'll work closely with the community to record the happenings of a server and put it on the website in the form of Lore?

We have talked about a journal before, and there will be an effort to have one. We have an automated feature like a newsreel in place which reports events as they happen. Players can access these newsreels even when they're out of the game.

You've mentioned that if you are attacked by someone of a "friendly" race and kill him while defending yourself, there is no alignment penalty. My question is what if you are attacked but the attacker misses, and you end up dealing the first blow to your attacker? Wouldn't this be interpreted by the game as you attacking the other player?

Yes you'll get hit with the alignment penalty. Turn-based games know what's going to happen before it does, but Darkfall is a real-time game. You cannot lock a target, you actually have to aim. When you let an arrow fly towards a target, the system can't know where it's going until it hits. Between the time you let it fly and it hits something, many things can happen: someone could run into its path, the intended target could duck etc. While a turn-based game could deal with this specific scenario by penalizing the attacker, it misses out on all the real-time coolness.

Is there an option for chat bubbles?

No chat bubbles, no damage numbers jumping, no neon rings around your feet, no glowing characters, no radar, no attack indicators. You can spell-cast a beacon on someone that signals his location for the duration if you like but that's about it.

Do clans that don't have a clan city have access to clan vaults?

Yes they do if they go to a city.

Will a clan member's rank be visible as a title?

Yes it's visible right after his name when you identify them with a mouse-over.

Are there writeable books in-game?

Not really other than your player journal, various in-game public and clan forums there isn't anything you can write on at this time.

Are offensive skills going to be dependent on supporting skills?
For example, like in UO, to take up swordsmanship you needed Tactics and Anatomy. Is DFO going to be like that or if you want archery you can just take up archery?

Both; there are skills that unlock others, but there are also skills you can just learn and practice without prerequisites.

What's the status on taming?

There are no pets and no taming. Our goal was to move Darkfall as far away as possible from MMOG half-measures like instancing, zoning, use of NPCs where you can use players, various automations etc. So taming falls into that category in a way, on the other hand we give you mounts you can use in combat, which you can control to attack while you're riding them. The functionality is there, we just don't feel that pets would add much to the game as it is.

Will there be a sprint feature?

There's a sprint feature, using it will use up stamina. You can sprint for a reasonable amount of time before you run out of stamina.

What happens when you run out of stamina?

You can't sprint, you can't do melee attacks, you can't run with a mount, and various other discomforts.

Also, for the most part swimming in any MMO usually sucks major balls because it is so damn slow. Any idea how it will be in DF?

In real-life, running is about 5 times faster than swimming so it's an existing analogy. You can sprint-swim in Darkfall, it's not that slow but if you want to get somewhere fast, you should probably use a vessel.

Do you need a skill to place buildings (architect)?

No skill, you need appropriate rank in the clan, or be the city mayor to place buildings.

Can characters go into prone mode?

No they can crouch though. Before someone feels this might be some pvp limitation, I'll remind them that you can't go prone in Counterstrike or Quake.

If two people are dueling with swords, will their swords bump in to each other when they attack at the same time? Will there be sparkles, as a special effect? (In other words, is there weapon collision?)

This is probably too much to ask for from a MMOG, and from most games for that matter. In console games where you might have seen something like this, it's not the collision detection on the weapons that creates that effect.

Can we move while we have an arrow stringed on our bow?

Yes, you can move, jump, and crouch freely.

Most spells will burn up reagents. How common are these?

Some spells don't require reagents. For most of the ones that do, you can get them all over the world by harvesting, buy them at vendors, loot them, or you could build farms for higher outputs.

Will they "stack" easily in our inventories?

Yes they'll stack.

Does the low level spell/special ability become completely useless when you earn high level one like we can see in other games?

That's a good question actually. In Darkfall, the early spells are not useless at all. Some of them don't require ingredients and they cast faster, fail less, so they're very practical. Others are unique and really useful so they are used regularly throughout the character's game-life.

Is a staff/wand and reagents needed for healing spells as well?

You always need a wand or staff to cast, but some spells don't require reagents. Other than spells for healing you can use potions, food, and resting to recover hit points.

In a war is it possible for me as a lone wolf, to hide in the city about to be sieged, and then kill whoever I want, or will the city be closed apart from to those involved?

I said earlier in the Q&A that we try to move away from MMOG half-measures. So you're free to do what you asked if you could do. We don't lock any players out of events or locations like sieges, quests, dungeons, etc.

Will there be sabotage that can be performed against enemy towns which doesn't involve siege warfare?

You can destroy buildings at the rate of one per day without a siege. You can disable buildings without any limits. By 'disable' I mean that you can bring their structural integrity down to zero which negates all bonuses the building may give out, and functions that it may perform.

Can boats sail from ocean to river and sail deep on into the continent?

Yes you can depending on the size of the boat. If it's too big, it could run aground; not fit inside a small river, it could get stuck under a low bridge etc.

On the subject of mounts can I get knocked off in the middle of a battle?

If your character gets incapacitated or killed, or if your mount is killed, you get knocked off.

If I do what happens to my horse if everyone else dies will it just wander around the map so anyone can take it, or will it stay in the same area?

The horse stays in the area for a while, then after a while it will die.

Do we acquire mounts except stealing them from other players? Do we buy them from vendors, are they bred/crafted or do they spawn in the wilderness?

You summon them through a medium which is crafted. You can also loot this from players.

Will mounts be allowed everywhere or will there be places where you can't mount?

They're allowed everywhere, and they can also swim.

I have better info showing the reality of this played out joke.

Notice how there's not a single mention of that new video Tasos promised to deliver "in a few weeks" over a month ago...

Oh and Aventurine is still using MONTHS OLD gameplay footage to demo their game with.

can someone please explain to me why they didn't record brand new fresh gameplay videos to bring along to a live demo game conference?

Doesn't this seem a little STRANGE to anyone?

Instead they brought along videos that are MONTHS old???

Pretty fucken scary that they can't even record new fresh video of the game.

I don't think he "promised" a new video.

One sec ...

We've started collecting in-game footage for a video update which is taking a while being low in the immediate priorities list, but moving along.

Link

They're collecting footage but promised nothing. It looks like something they're doing when they have the time.

He said they would deliver a video "sometime in the next few weeks" a month ago. I would say a month equals a few weeks?

We're looking at releasing a comprehensive video sometime in the next few weeks.

Let me highlight the important bit there.

We're looking at releasing a comprehensive video sometime in the next few weeks.

Tasos did not promise a video. They're merely looking at the option, which is an entirely different thing.

Oh I see.. so less than 6 months from a commercial launch they are merely "looking" at "possibly" releasing a video that shows more then some empty buildings and models standing around?

LOL. Are you seriously that fucken deluded that you would sit there and defend this clown named Tasos?

Tasos is a LIAR plain and simple. He's been caught lying about working for MSN Gaming Zone which he never worked for. He shows up to that Greek Game Developers conference with a video to demo Darkfall with that is OVER A YEAR OLD. He finds the time to form things like a Greek Game Developer Club (http://www.gameworld.gr/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1345&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0)

but yet can't seem to ever find the time to do something as simple as record real gameplay footage from a (his own words here) "feature complete and beta ready MMORPG"...

WAKE UP. Tasos is a salesman trying to sell Darkfall to the community and to potential investors, that's what the whole purpose of his updates have been for all these years.

Tasos said recently according to GameWorld "If Darkfall had released 3 years ago it would have been buried, and would not have the community it has now"

That is a damning indication of the real motivations behind all the claims and boasts he's been making for years about Darkfall and Aventurine.

He recently apparently made a lot of the same grandiose claims and exaggerations at that recent Greek gaming conference, like Darkfall having 3 million users and hundreds of thousands of fans, and a ""great reputation"".

Darkfall does not have 3 million of anything.

Great reputation? That's a funny claim considering the entire industry thinks of it as 100% vaporware.

He has no credibility left and is acting desperatly to try and keep this thing going because he has a personal investment in it, like alot of the other developers of the project do.

Look at his CV, The guy has ZERO experience or qualifications in the gaming industry listed, but specialties listed in

Game Development, Business Management, Strategic Planning, Marketing, Public Relations Management, Project Management, Community Management / Community Building.

That pretty much sums up what Darkfall has been for the community so far, under Tasos auspices.

Tasos has shown time after time so far that Darkfall is not much more then a Marketing campaign, a public relations exercise, a community management exercise and an exercise in community building.

This I presume is a demonstration of the business and project management as part of strategic planning that Tasos considers himself a "specialist" in.

This is what Tasos has demonstrated he considers "game development" means.

I'm not sure how many people remember what is was like under Razorwax but it was TOTALLY different, probably because they where still so confident and naïve.

This all started after Aventurine was formed and Tasos started representing his interest in this company and its only project of any significance, Darkfall

Tasos is a co owner of Darkfall and he has been trying to sell it to the community and potential investors and publishers for years.

6 months left and we will see if Tasos actually does have anything behind all the hype and spin.

Everybodies been following Tasos into the rabbit hole.

Tasos is playing his last card right now. They pretend that the game is ready. That the game is amazing. So, he is pretending to be giving publishers and investors a last chance to buy Darkfall. But the problem is that even as a scammer, he is an amateur. People with money are not that stupid. They need some proof that what they are buying is worth something.

They do as they please. I'm sure we'll get one eventually but it's not at the top of their to-do list yet.

teedle:
LOL. Are you seriously that fucken deluded that you would sit there and defend this clown named Tasos?

I'm 'deluded' am I?

lol

If the game comes out, it comes out. If it doesn't, it doesn't. It's just a game so don't get so worked up about it.

teedle:
Tasos is a LIAR plain and simple. He's been caught lying about working for MSN Gaming Zone which he never worked for.

That article had a LOT of glaring errors in it (Tasos is head programmer is he? - lol), and not just about Aventurine too. It could be that he did work for those companies or it could be that the 'reporter' made more glaring errors or it could be that he fibbed. We don't know, and I don't care.

teedle:

He also showed that recent video which is only 3 months old or so.

He already said that they were working on it.

teedle:
from a (his own words here) "feature complete and beta ready MMORPG"...

He only said "feature complete", not beta ready.

teedle:
WAKE UP. Tasos is a salesman trying to sell Darkfall to the community and to potential investors, that's what the whole purpose of his updates have been for all these years.

rofl!

His updates were trying to sell Darkfall to investors? LOL! Come ON now! Were that true we would get the whole nine-yard Funcom/Age of Conan treatment. The devs would be falling over themselves to talk about and hype the game.

All WE get is a dev update every two weeks ... IF we are lucky.

teedle:
Tasos said recently according to GameWorld "If Darkfall had released 3 years ago it would have been buried, and would not have the community it has now"

He's right. Three years ago the graphics were dodgy, there was only one mount, the Alfar were ugly, there were no shadows and the community was small.

The game we're getting in 2008 (probably) is far above what the game was in 2005.

teedle:
Great reputation? That's a funny claim considering the entire industry thinks of it as 100% vaporware.

No, not the industry. Just one vary sad an lonely individual who's own worthless mmorpg project famously crashed-and-burned a long time ago, and who now spams all the forums with "Dorkfailz is t3h Vaporwarez!!!11!! Tasos iz t3h sc4mm3r!!" under multiple identities.

It's just him ... and people like yourself that believe his rantings without looking deeper at his motivations.

teedle:
Look at his CV, The guy has ZERO experience or qualifications in the gaming industry listed,

We don't know that.

teedle:
Tasos has shown time after time so far that Darkfall is not much more then a Marketing campaign, a public relations exercise, a community management exercise and an exercise in community building.

If that were true then it would be a failure. Darkfall isn't that well known and Tasos hardly ever talks to the community. If you want marketing go see how AoC and Warhammer Online do things.

teedle:
Tasos is a co owner of Darkfall

There's no evidence of that though it would not surprise me. They are a small independent developer after all.

teedle:
and he has been trying to sell it to the community and potential investors

There's no evidence to back up those claims of yours.

teedle:
6 months left and we will see if Tasos actually does have anything behind all the hype and spin.

Things are looking good in that regard. Aventurine has a sweet publishing deal now. They even control a stake in the new division that the two companies are setting up specifically to publish and run Darkfall.

teedle:
Everybodies been following Tasos into the rabbit hole.

I doubt it but we shall see. Darkfall has serious talent and money behind them, unlike say the Thrones of Chaos scammers or the Citadel of Sorcery people who have only had experience in making freeware screen savers before.

No-one buys or invests in a company without looking at the books or the product. Aventurine's publishers would not have offered any deal, let alone a sweet deal, if they had not seen the product.

He only said "feature complete", not beta ready

Oh really? Then why did they say in one of the last dev journals here at Warcry that they could have a Beta tomorrow if they wanted too?? don't you need a Beta ready piece of software to have a Beta tomorrow?? Another lie to add to the list perhaps??
[/quote]

That article had a LOT of glaring errors in it

Ya you're right and the people at Gameworld greece were told to LEAVE IT AS IT IS. The guy at GameWorld greece was asked about it and he said Tasos did not tell him to change anything except one minor correction about his position in Aventurine. All the lies still remain.

Things are looking good in that regard. Aventurine has a sweet publishing deal now.

No sorry. They have no game publishing deal. That company is not a video game publisher. It's just a hired CD replication company in the backwoods of Greece somewhere. They can't get a real publisher to publish their game. That's why they are self publishing...

I doubt it but we shall see. Darkfall has serious talent and money behind them

You're hilarious. Serious talent? where? show me CV's with all this serious talent building Darkfall. Serious money? where? show me the serious money they have. And if by serious money you're pointing to that MYTH that they got a 27 mill loan you can save your breath because that never happened. They issued a convertible bond loan meaning they put up convertible bonds for sale. they never got any kind of cash money loan.

You're completely DELUDED. They do not have any real talent nor serious money. That has been shown to be the case time and time again. You should really start looking at places talking about Darkfall that are NOT censored like the official forums are and you'll find all the real proof you need about the project.

No-one buys or invests in a company without looking at the books or the product.

Right. And that's exactly why they have no investors besides Tasos and his other buddies trying to build darkfall from their own pockets. That AudioVisual company is not an investor. They just hired them to burn CD's for them because they can't get a real game publisher and have to self publish.

teedle:
Great reputation? That's a funny claim considering the entire industry thinks of it as 100% vaporware.

No, not the industry.

Yes the ENTIRE industry knows it's vaporware.

Isn't it funny how no game sites ANYWHERE cover Darkfall anymore? MMORPG.com has not had a single news item about Darkfall in over a year. The last place to actually cover Darkfall was here at Warcry until they finally wised up.

This is the way the Darkfall ends
Not with a beta but a whimper.

Zorvan said

Hey Mr. GameWorldGR. Can you tell us if the blatant lies involving Tasos past work experience at the conference were in fact told verbatim from information provided by Tasos, or was the magazine really so ignorant as to "misquote" his entire history, as Tasos would have everyone believe. Tasos says it's all your fault. Is it?

GameWorldGR replyed

Tasos Flampouras told me to fix a single word about his POSITION in Aventurine. Nothing more, nothing less. All other information provided by GameWorld is correct and Tasos agrees with that as we received a second e-mail to confirm these information.

Not with a beta but a whimper.

That's why I used the "many inaccuracies and mistakes" quote from that recent update from Tasos, I was referring to his response to the article that you have reposted.

GameWorldGR stated there was only a single word to fix, and Tasos agreed everything else in the article is correct, because he confirmed it in a second email.

The many inaccuracies, mistakes, misquotes and misrepresentation's that Tasos claimed where present in the article that where not fixed.

Apparently only amounted to an amendment of a single word relating his position in Aventurine.

Perhaps Tasos is just as vague and ambiguous when publicly speaking in his native language to fellow developers, as he is vague and ambiguous when speaking English to the Darkfall community.

Tasos is a clown plain and simple running a clown show called Darkfall Online.

The part where it says he worked for MSN gaming zone is still in there.

He never worked for MSN Gaming zone.

Someone should call up MSN Gaming zone and ask them about that.

I can now prove that Henning Ludvigson beyond reasonable doubt is the owner of Aventurine and Darkfall, was Aventurines largest investor when it was created in late 2002, and has probably been its only or main source of finance for Darkfalls development for the last 5 years.

From his Linkedin.com CV

Henning Ludvigsen

Art Director at Aventurine S.A and Owner, Aventurine S.A

Norway

From his Website http://www.henningludvigsen.com/wordpress/?page_id=9

At the end of 2002 I transferred profession, moving from commercial advertisement to computer game development. This section shows some samples of 2D art I?ve done for the MMORPG-game Darkfall.

For the game, Darkfall, I am working as the art director, and doing 2D art, 2D textures, 3D models, GUI, special effects, etc...

Aventurine was formed to publish and develop Darkfall at the end of 2002, thats when he moved to Greece from Norway after "selling everything" and when he invested enough in Aventurine to make him the Owner of Darkfall.

In his own words from his website forums http://www.pixelbrush.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=498&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=darkfall&start=0

-------
Tick and tick, well I USED to make good money in the ad-agency industry, but got all burned out after almost 10 years doing that. Sold everything I had and moved to Greece to work as a computer game developer (in-which I have NO pre-experience, mind you, hehe).

Basically, I have my fulltime job as Art Director in this game company, well more than full time, really. And since this is our first game, the income is nothing to speak of. We bascially do this because we've been burning for this project for MANY years (I've been involved in it for almost 8 years).

But things are hard, and I have to do a lot of extra work to keep things going. I also work for Fantasy Flight Games, and other random commissions and projects that might pop by. I used to do a magazine for a cancer organisation in Norway for 8 years, but they canned me now recently so I'll have to look for something new.

So, basically, computer game stuff during daytime, and during night time, I put on my mask and cape and draw fantasy-related stuff

Looking forward to be a real boy with a somewhat normal income again

Well, I don't really struggle. The thing is that I my fulltime job is mainly a project I "have" to be involved in (the quest of my life-kind of thing), and this only leave me with little time for personal painting and other projects during evenings and weekends only. And when I limit myself to only doing fantasy-related stuff, it's obvious I don't do it for the money, hehe. I used to do lots of commercial illustrations, and did quite good with that on its own, but not as fun painting topless chicks and tentacles You can't have one without the other, and I chose fun.
-----------

This explains why this project has so little to show for itself after 5 years since Aventurine was formed, after Henning Ludvigson invested enough in it to become the owner, and has worked so hard for so long to self finance his dream project.

So, basically, computer game stuff during daytime, and during night time, I put on my mask and cape and draw fantasy-related stuff Looking forward to be a real boy with a somewhat normal income again.

well more than full time, really. And since this is our first game, the income is nothing to speak of.

This must be the experienced professionals getting paid big money by Aventurine you speak of eh Muffins???

Ok first of all, the MoU is nothing more of a handshake between companies. Until contracts are signed you got nothing solid.

The above memo simply mean that somehow Tasos managed to persuade AV to help him distribute his game, but on the other hand Tasos had nothing solid in his hands so all he got was a MoU that can be broken anytime.

AV has the resources to exit this deal intact easily and w/o losing or risking money, so they had nothing to lose and they try a new market segment which is good for them.

The 25mil bond they issued has nothing to do with Aventurine or Tassos.

Pick those news with a grain of salt guys. cheers

edit2: basically they have issued a memo, because they have nothing solid to show. Other than promises which you all are aware, they got nothing else, and AV have a reputation to guard

I still wonder why people are surprised by this. Darkfall is a great idea but home tech, even if these people are the best dev team in the world, isn't advanced enough to run it like they say it can be played.

I always haev and still believe this game is nothing more then an advertisement for the dev team to try and get funding money so they can keep tinkering at it while still employed and use the game and the hype they make about it as a tool to get a real job at a good company. The problem is they overplayed their hand. As in most hype you have to strike at the right time. You don't take your first offer but you don't hang around after the hype fades away hanging on to it after it's peeked. The gaming industry people can see this isn't going anywhere after all these years so they are every passing month less inclined to offer these people jobs. They probably also hoping having their own game and high end "titles" would get them higher level jobs and better pay. They just overplayed their hands and now are just trying to get something out of nothing.

The game could still come out, other games have taken longer to come out, Look at Shadowbane, that game was in development so long they had to overhaul it's graphics while making it to get it up to date. But anyone putting money in this development team and Darkfall are more desperate to make something out of nothing then the Devs are themselves.

I also believe MMORPG.com should set a standard for their games list. Any game that is so many years into development and is still not out, should simply be removed from the site until the Devs can prove the game will be out within, say a year. Five+ years of Dev time is simply far too long to even bother hyping about a game that is not even close to coming out. Mention the game is under development and have a link to their website but do not have forums up for a game that is not even close to coming out. What does this do to help the gaming industry?... Talking about a game for years that is not even close to ready?

Wake up to REALITY. Darkfall is not what you think or hope it is and it probabhly never will be.

Holy shit, cant you make up any excuse yourself anymore that you have to litter the entire Warcry forum up with posts from random guys without any insight of Aventurine.

As if anyone reads that random crap you googled together

Theres not even a point in discussing it.
The only thing you can do is wait until end 2008 when they said it would be out. If its not ,you're right, if it is, you're wrong, now get a fucking life and go do something more usefull damn retarded aoc spambot
